La Grotta dello Zaffiro
The
first cave is sited in the islet of Isca, a private island once
owned by the famous italian theatre writer and actor Eduardo de
Filippo. After a series of arches, literally covered with
Parazoanthus axinellae and Astroydes calycularis, we reach the
entrance of the grotto, a vertical crevice only 7 m deep.
The rocky walls of the cave offer a unique scenario to the divers,
with unbelievable tricks of light. Ascending, we surface in a
large room, full of breathable air. Here it is possible to admire
plenty of alabaster-like stalactites and stalagmites. Some of them
are submerged, and are covered with the yellow Parazoanthus
axinellae. The Sapphire cave is so called from the special color of
the water inside. Surely it is the most attractive grotto in the
sorrentine peninsula. The cave has a large main entrance only 3 m
deep, and a second entrance, narrower, at 15 m. To pass the large
main gallery is not a problem, being just 4 m long. The pool
inside is a real subterranean lake, lit up of blue light from the
sea, more than 40 m large, and the roof is more than 20 m high. A
forest of stalactites hangs from the roof, and somewhere they join
the stalagmites, forming alabaster columns.
